At the Comprehensive Foot and Ankle Institute where we specialize in Regenerative Medical Therapy and Minimal Incision Surgery, we also perform stem cell injections.
We inject these in patients that have severe Achilles tendinitis and/or ruptures, also Posterior tibial tendinitis and/or ruptures. They can also be used in severe arthritis of the ankle and foot.
The stem cells are taken from bone marrow aspiration. This is a rich source of mesenchymal stem cells and other healing factors used in regenerative medicine. We usually get the bone marrow aspirate from the calcaneus and/or distal tibia. Bone marrow aspiration is a primary source for harvesting cells such as mesenchymal stem cells. These are powerful progenitor cells which have the ability to differentiate into various cell types and release growth factors.
We take the bone marrow aspirate and then we use a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the cells growth factors and cytokines used for the injection
We used the bone marrow aspirate and mesenchymal cells to treat many injuries of the foot and ankle such as severe osteoarthritis of the ankle and foot as well as Achilles tendon tears ruptures as well as posterior tibial tendinitis as well as ruptures and they can be used in any aspect of the foot and ankle due to disease and/or injuries.
The stem cells are believed to reduce inflammation and stimulate the body’s natural healing process to regenerate tissue.
What we do is to use local anesthesia to numb up the foot and ankle. Then we use special instrumentation to withdraw bone marrow aspiration from the calcaneus and/or distal tibia. Then we use a centrifuge to create the concentrate and then we finally inject this into the affected area.
This is an outpatient procedure and the patient can walk on it immediately.
This is a very specialized procedure and insurance companies do not cover this.
